Johnny Depp To Play Freddie Mercury?
According to the UK Independent, Robert DeNiro’s production company Tribeca Productions is developing a biopic based on the life of legendary Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Rumor has it recent Golden Globe nominee Johnny Depp is slated to play Mercury. Queen guitarist Brian May has confirmed the project is in development. On his website he posts:
“Discussions are at an early stage. He (Johnny) would be a worthy counterpart for Freddie on screen. I don’t think I can say any more right now.”
Depp is pretty resemblant to Freddie, but other than that, we know he’s pretty good at playing sexually ambiguous characters. We’ve seen him play Edward Scissorhands, cross-dressing director Ed Wood, zany Willy Wonka, and of course the swishy and flamboyant Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.
If this really does end up happening, I cannot wait to see the film. Johnny is always great at playing eccentric characters, and God knows it’ll be fun seeing him in those costumes. I swear, there’s nothing this man can’t do. Who are other people that could play Freddie? I say Eric Bana. He looks so much like him it’s freaky.
Wow that sounds pretty cool, and here I asked a friend the other day why I wondered they haven’t made a movie about Freddie. Can’t wait to see the movie! With Johnny portaying him, I’m sure it will be a hit!
It’s about time somebody made a movie about Freddie Mercury. Johnny Depp would be amazing in it! Is this really going to happen? The date on this article was January 2007…. I haven’t heard anything since and we’re now in the beginning of ‘08!

Freddie is my all-time favorite singer, I think he was the first celebrity that I had a crush on! I wouldn’t trust anyone else to do his role in a movie but Johnny Depp!! That guy is awesome with anything that he does, he is so determined, and also my most favorite actor!!
