Diva Feud: Christina Aguilera vs. Mariah Carey

Posted under Celebrities, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey by Chris Evans on Tuesday 16 May 2006 at 6:47 pm

Apparently there’s some bad blood between multi-octave divas Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey.

According to Access Hollywood, the war of words started when Aguilera said that Carey was “never cool to me” in the June issue of GQ.

“One time, we were at a party and I think she got really drunk, and she had just really derogatory things to say to me,” Aguilera told the magazine. “But it was at that time that she had that breakdown, so she might have been very medicated.”

(In 2001, Carey was hospitalized for exhaustion after several bizarre public appearances, including a near-striptease on MTV’s TRL.)

In response to Aguilera’s comments, Carey told Access Hollywood, “I had hoped that Christina was in a better place now than the last time I saw her, when she showed up uninvited at one of my parties and displayed questionable behavior.

“It is sad yet predictable that she would use my name at this time to reinvent past incidents for her promotional gain,” Carey added. “It is in my heart to forgive and I will keep her in my prayers.”

Aguilera, whose new album, Back to Basics, is due Aug. 15, seems ready for a truce. “I do not want any bad energy with anyone,” she told Access when contacted for comment. “My intentions were not to upset Mariah with any statements that were published or taken out of context. I have all the respect in the world for her.”

‘Crash’ and Mariah Carey Lead The NAACP Image Award Winners

Posted under Celebrities, Crash, Jamie Foxx, Mariah Carey, Movies, Music, Samuel L. Jackson, Television by Chris Evans on Saturday 4 March 2006 at 5:02 pm

Jamie Foxx’s quest for musical stardom got a boost Saturday at the 37th Annual NAACP Image Awards, where the Oscar-winning actor was picked as best male musical artist.

Foxx, who received an Oscar last year for portraying Ray Charles in the movie “Ray,” has begun performing tracks from his album “Unpredictable.”

“It’s good to be surrounded by black folks,” Foxx said. “Black folks are music.”

Foxx said after the show that music was “what I always wanted to do.”

“The Bernie Mac Show” took top honors in three categories. Mac was picked as comedy series best actor, while co-star Camille Winbush took home best supporting actress and director Millicent Shelton got the top television directing nod.

“America, I heard your prayers, and you wanted me here,” said Mac, showing a bit of the standup comedy that made him famous. “The Mac Man cometh and I’m bringing hell with me.”

Chris Rock show wins best TV series

On his heels was comedian Chris Rock, whose life-story-based “Everybody Hates Chris” won best television series.

“I want to thank all the white kids who beat (me),” said Rock, joking with the crowd. “I’m rich!”

The awards honor black artists in movies, television, music and literature.

Crash,” about racial tensions in Los Angeles, took the top movie award. The hometown film led movie contenders with six nominations, including best picture, four of the five supporting-actor slots — for Terrence Howard, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Don Cheadle and Larenz Tate — and for Thandie Newton as supporting actress.

Howard beat out his colleagues for the supporting actor nod, and also took best actor in a TV movie or miniseries for “Lackawanna Blues.”

Samuel L. Jackson took best actor award for “Coach Carter,” a story of a basketball coach who forced his players to emphasize studying over hoops.

Carey, Keys take home awards

Mariah Carey, nominated for four awards, kept her comeback streak going when her “Emancipation of Mimi” won best album. Carey’s win came just weeks after she took home three Grammy Awards.

Alicia Keys, who tied Carey for Image Award nominations, took home three awards: top female musical artist, top song and video awards for “Unbreakable.”

Two stars of the long-running soap opera “The Young and the Restless” won honors, with Shemar Moore and Victoria Rowell taking actor and actress awards for daytime drama.

Moore talked about feeling moved after meeting Coretta Scott King, the widow of Martin Luther King Jr. who died Jan. 30. “I think she is sitting up there with her husband smiling as we continue to chase the dream,” Moore said.

L.A. mayor speaks

In a brief speech, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said he felt the Image Awards were special in a town full of award shows because they stand for racial equality.

“We are not just reveling in the power of Hollywood, but challenging Hollywood to use that power for good,” Villaraigosa said.

Carlos Santana, who performed at the show, received the NAACP Hall of Fame Award while the Neville Brothers received the Chairman’s award. Writer and businesswoman Susan Taylor was honored with the President’s Award.

The 37th Annual Image Awards, hosted by Cuba Gooding Jr., will air Friday on Fox.

Paul McCartney, Kelly Clarkson Added To Grammy Performers

The performance lineup for the 48th annual Grammy Awards continues to swell. Following yesterday’s (Feb. 1) confirmation of a show-opening Madonna/Gorillaz pairing, the Recording Academy has added Paul McCartney, Kelly Clarkson and Ciara to a bill now made up of a dozen performances.

McCartney is nominated for three awards this year: album of the year and best pop vocal album for “Chaos and Creation in the Backyard” (MPL/Capitol), as well as best male pop vocal performance for the album track “Fine Line.” Despite his long career and 13 past Grammy wins, this will mark the former Beatle’s first Grammy performance.

Triple-nominee Ciara (best new artist, best rap/sung collaboration for “1, 2 Step” featuring Missy Elliott and best short form music video for “Lose Control” with Missy Elliott and Fat Man Scoop), will take part in the multi-artist tribute to Sly & the Family Stone. Double-nominee Clarkson (best female pop vocal performance for “Since U Been Gone” and best pop vocal album for “Breakaway” (RCA) is set to perform solo.

Comedian/talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has been drafted to introduce McCartney’s performance. Other newly added presenters are the members of Destiny’s Child, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Chris Brown, professional cyclist Lance Armstrong and actresses Jennifer Love Hewitt, Teri Hatcher and Jenna Elfman.

Mariah Carey, John Legend and Kanye West share the lead with eight nominations heading into the Feb. 8 ceremony at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The event will be broadcast live on CBS.

Christina Aguilera

U2 , Mary J. Blige, Faith Hill, Keith Urban, Christina Aguilera, Herbie Hancock and Jamie Foxx have all signed on to give collaborative performances at next month’s Grammy Awards ceremony.

U2 and Blige will hit the stage together for a joint performance, as will Urban and Hill, Foxx and West, and Aguilera and Hancock.

Organizers did not specify what songs the artists would perform, but it’s a good bet that previous Grammy winngers U2 and Blige will offer up a rendition of the Irish rock group’s classic hit “One,” which Blige covered on her most recent album, “The Breakthrough.”

Foxx is featured on West’s 2005 smash hit “Gold Digger,” and Aguilera sang on the Grammy-nominated cut “A Song for You,” which appeared on Hancock’s latest album, “Possibilities.”

U2, whose trophy case already houses 15 Grammy trophies, is in contention for five more at this year’s ceremony: Album of the Year and Best Rock Album (”How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb“); Song of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals (”Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own“); and Best Rock Song (”City of Blinding Lights“).

Hill, a four-time Grammy winner, is vying for Best Female Country Vocal Performance (”Mississippi Girl“), Best Country Collaboration with Vocals (”Like We Never Loved At All” with Tim McGraw), and Best Country Album (”Fireflies”). Urban is up for Best Male Country Vocal Performance (”You’ll Think of Me“).

Aguilera and Hancock hope to share a win in the Best Pop Collaboration category for “A Song for You.”

Singer-turned-actor-turned-singer Foxx has a nod in the Best Male R&B Vocal Performance category for “Creepin’,” a track from “So Amazing: An All-Star Tribute to Luther Vandross,” and shares nominations with West for “Gold Digger” in the Best Rap Solo Performance and Record of the Year categories.

As previously reported, West is nominated in a total of eight categories, as are fellow previously announced Grammy performers Mariah Carey and John Legend.

In addition to the new batch of performers, Grammy organizers also announced that country duo Big & Rich, along with actors Tom Hanks and Terrence Howard, will appear as presenters.

Additional performers and presenters will be announced shortly, according to a press release.

The 48th annual Grammy Awards ceremony takes place Feb. 8 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and will air live on CBS-TV.
