Fresh Links: Jake Gyllenhaal Bisexual?

Posted under Brokeback Mountain, Carrie Underwood, Celebrities, Gay, Jake Gyllenhaal, Matt Damon, Ryan Gosling, Vince Vaughn by Chris Evans on Monday 22 October 2007 at 11:32 am

Jake Gyllenhaal defends his sexuality in the Telegraph when asked about his comments in Out magazine where he implied he might be bisexual. Jesus, can’t someone play a gay role without getting hounded about their sexuality?

Is Ugly Betty star Vanessa Williams dating Vince Vaughn? Dear God, I hope not. After he stopped smoking he turned into a hot mess–fat, wrinkled, bald, with nasty nose hair. And Vanessa’s a Goddess.

After already gaining 20 pounds and growing a full beard for the role, Ryan Gosling has pulled out of Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones a day before the film starts shooting due to “creative differences”. He’s been replaced by Oscar nominee Mark Wahlberg.

The screenwriters who penned the Superman Returns film are not returning for the lowly anticipated sequel. That’s definitely good news for Bryan Singer, the studio, and anyone with any hopes of this film being any good. That first movie was awful.

While promoting The Bourne Ultimatum in Japan hottie Matt Damon said he is open to possibly doing another Bourne film. Aren’t there only three books, though? I’m afraid this could end up not being so great. I loved the first three movies.

Directed by Gavin Hood, X-Men prequel Wolverine is coming to the big screen in May of 2009. Here’s to hoping for many gratuitous Hugh Jackman nude scenes.

Debra Messing will reprise her Emmy-nominated role in her mini-series The Starter Wife. It’s coming back to USA as an actual series–they’ve so far ordered ten episodes.

Carrie Underwood who recently broke up with football star Tony Romo, is now dating Chase Crawford whom you might recognize from the CW’s moderate hit Gossip Girl. I can’t be the only one whose gaydar is pinging.

Meredith Viera Makes Gay Brokeback Joke

Posted under Brokeback Mountain, Celebrities, Gay, Jake Gyllenhaal, Meredith Vieira, Movies by Chris Evans on Tuesday 16 October 2007 at 3:15 pm

How tasteful, Meredith. Why is it that everyone always focuses on the gay sex in this movie rather than the movie itself?

Brokeback Mountain Coming To Broadway?

Posted under Broadway, Brokeback Mountain, Hugh Jackman, James Marsden by Chris Evans on Tuesday 24 July 2007 at 12:02 pm

Rumors are swirling that there is an effort to bring the massive hit and critically acclaimed cowboy romance Brokeback Mountain to Broadway. There is no word as to whether it will be adapted as a play or as a musical, but there are two stars who are supposedly being approached to star in the Broadway adaptation. X-Men co-stars Hugh Jackman and James Marsden have been named as the two actors they are shooting for to star as Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist in the weeper love story. Considering the hopeful casting choices, I’m going to go ahead and assume it’s being adapted into a musical.

We know Hugh Jackman for his singing from his Tony winning performance in The Boy From Oz, where he played gay singer and songwriter Peter Allen, and James Marsden just recently showed off his impressive vocal chops as Corny Collins in Hairspray. Both have sung previously, and both have played gay roles before–Marsden played a gay man in the movie Heights, but would they take on such an acclaimed and successful film, knowing the difficulty of duplicating the success and praise when brought to a stage, especially to music?

I could definitely see the show being a commercial hit–especially with such hunky co-stars, many will turn out just to see them kiss on stage–and I can’t imagine the stage door frenzy after each show. But I’m skeptical as to whether this story will translate well to the stage (I mean…it takes place on a mountain…what about the sheep?) and whether it will work as a musical. But then again, I was wary of The Color Purple on Broadway, and that turned out to be a wonderful play. Time will tell if any of these rumors are even true.

Mark Wahlberg Says ‘Brokeback’ Creeped Him Out

Posted under Brokeback Mountain, Celebrities, Gay, Joaquin Phoenix, Movies by Chris Evans on Wednesday 28 February 2007 at 1:56 pm

Apparently Mark Wahlberg was happy filmmaker Ang Lee passed him over for one of the roles in Academy Award winning film ‘Brokeback Mountain‘ because the idea of playing a gay cowboy ‘creeped him out’.

At some point during the development of the film, he and Joaquin Phoenix were considered for the roles of Jack and Ennis, but Wahlberg felt uncomfortable about gay sex acts in a tent.

He says:

I met with Ang Lee on that movie, I read 15 pages of the script and got a little creeped out. It was very graphic, descriptive - the spitting on the hand, getting ready to do the thing. I told Ang Lee, ‘I like you, you’re a talented guy, if you want to talk about it more…’ Thankfully, he didn’t.”

Obviously the parts eventually went to Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal who both received Oscar nominations for the film, and the movie was almost unanimously critically claimed, but Wahlberg says he had no real desire to see the film.

He adds, “I didn’t rush to see Brokeback, it’s just not my deal… Obviously, it was done in taste - look how it was received.”

Now here’s my thing. I can understand a straight man being uncomfortable with the gay sex scenes in the film, but to use the words “creeped out” is almost disgusting. What’s creepy about it? It’s just a sex scene like in any other movie. It’s simulated. It’s not like anyone’s actually asking you to put your penis in anyone’s ass. And considering the fact that you’ve done some pretty explicit scenes in your day, it’s disappointing to me that he’d have that attitude about the film.

Then he has the nerve to say that obviously the movie was well received because the homosexuality was done in taste. Excuse me? So because this is a story about two gay men, the sex needs to be tasteful and classy, yet there’s no problem with the millions of raunchy and explicit heterosexual sex scenes that are out there in movies that have been great films.

I love Mark, as an actor–and he’s a gorgeous man. But these statements seriously disappoint me. I thought he had outgrown this crap years ago.

Fresh Links: Nicole Kidman To Guest Star On Nip/Tuck

Oscar winner Nicole Kidman is starring in an upcoming episode of hit drama Nip/Tuck. Apparently she personally went to Ryan Murhpy and asked him to give her a role where she could wear a bunch of scary prosthetics. The Hours, anyone?

The sequel to the Jim Carrey hit “Bruce Almighty”, “Evan Almighty”, starring Steve Carrell and Lauren Graham is making headlines for it’s ridiculous budget of 250 million dollars. It is the highest budget ever for a comedy.

Our beloved Desperate Housewives takes yet another dip in the ratings despite the hottness of both Jesse Metcalfe and newcomer Josh Henderson.

Contrary to the rumors, Jake Gyllenhaal will not be reuniting with his Brokeback Mountain co-star Heath Ledger in the Batman Begins sequel.

Halle Berry is starring in a new movie called “Class Act” where she’ll play a teacher who takes up a challenge by her students to run for Congress. Hopefully this’ll suck less than…oh, anything else she’s ever done?

Diane Sawyer’s interview with bigot Mel Gibson is set to air tomorrow, and it seems completely pointless for anyone to watch. It’ll be an hour of damage control by a liar and a fraud. Go see his new movie Apocalypto, though! (Note the sarcasm).

Pop Culture Digest : Brokeback Banned and Dixie Chicks Upset Again

Posted under Brokeback Mountain, Celebrities, Movies, Music, Television by Chris Evans on Sunday 21 May 2006 at 7:40 pm

An investigation is launched in Kentucky after an teacher uses a 2 1/2 minute clip from ‘Brokeback Mountain‘ in a senior cinematography class.

I’m a bit lost here. It’s a cinematography class, and it’s a film that has been noted for it’s rich cinematography. It specifies in the article that the scene that was shown contained no sexual content. So what exactly is the problem? Well, apparently a few parents have problems with their kids..being expose to gayness..I guess?

“This is a really bad time for all this to have happened,” said Smith, whose 17-year-old son, Chris, was in the class. “If she wanted to show it in class she should have gotten parents permission and if some students wanted to see it, it should have been their choice.”

Right…honey, why would you need permission to just show a movie. It’s not inappropriate, the clip contained no explicit language or sexual content–why does your kid need a permission slip to simply watch a gay-themed movie–especially when the only purpose of the clip was to note the cinematography. Get over yourselves.

The Dixie Chicks are at it again.

After pissing off Country music fans a few years ago with an apparently “treasonous” comment about Bush at a London concert, the first single off their new album “Taking The Long Way“, “Not Ready To Make Nice“, is just as controversial.

Can the Dixie Chicks survive without their core conservative Country audience? We’ll have to see when their new album releases on May 23.

7th Heaven, the longest running family series in television history, looks like it’s going to continue making history come the 2006 fall season.

After having already announced the end of the series and with the airing of the series finale, it was assumed 7th Heaven was over.

But CW, the new network formed by the WB and UPN has picked up the show and put it onto its fall schedule meaning we will have the Camdens to help us figure out how to deal with our own family problems for who knows how many years to come.

‘Narnia’ Garners Incredible First Week Sales

Posted under Brokeback Mountain, Movies by Chris Evans on Friday 14 April 2006 at 6:18 pm

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe easily topped the national DVD sales chart for the week ending April 9, while the previous week’s top seller, King Kong, notched a second round atop the rental chart.

Brokeback Mountain finished a distant second its first week in stores, barely outselling third-ranked “Kong.” “Brokeback” distributor Universal said the film sold 1.4 million DVDs its first day in stores, while first-day sales for Disney’s “Narnia” were pegged at 4 million units.

Best-picture Oscar winner Crash jumped six places to No. 6 thanks to the release of a two-disc director’s cut edition of the Lionsgate title.

On trade publication Home Media Retailing’s video rental chart, “Brokeback” bowed at No. 2, with estimated rental earnings of $6.3 million, a tad shy of the $6.4 million earned by “Kong” its second week out. “Narnia” debuted at No. 3, with rental earnings of $6.1 million.

The “What Film Should Have Won The Oscar?” Poll has come to a close, and not surprisingly, Brokeback Mountain is the winner, with Crash coming in a distant second.

This is probably a preview for what will happen tomorrow when both films face off on DVD (‘Crash’ is being re-released as a 2-Disc Director’s Cut).

This poll marks the biggest voter turnout we’ve had since the launch of the site in December. (409 votes)

Here are the results:

Brokeback Mountain comes in first with 59% of the votes.

Crash is in second with 33%

Good Night, and Good Luck is a very distant third with 3% (14 Votes)

Munich is in fourth with 3% (13 Votes)

And Capote came in last with 1%
