Jonathan Rhys Meyers loves playing homosexual roles so much, he is desperate to branch out and portray world famous gay icons on the big screen.

The Irish star, who played gay men in 1998 movie Velvet Goldmine and 2004 blockbuster Alexander, is determined to snap up the parts of Rock Hudson or Montgomery Clift, should their biopics be on the horizon.

He says, “Wait another ten years, I’ll play Rock Hudson and I’ll be back to handbag. “I’m actually a little bit small for Rock. Maybe Montgomery Clift!”

Breath of Fresh Ink’s Hottie of the Month: Jonathan Rhys-Meyers

Posted under Celebrities, Gay, Jonathan Rhys Meyers by Chris Evans on Saturday 6 May 2006 at 6:05 am

Breath of Fresh Ink’s May Hottie is sexy Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

You might recognize him from films such as Velvet Goldmine with Ewan McGregor, the Golden Globe nominated Woody Allen film Match Point with Scarlett Johansson, or his empowering soccer flick Bend It Like Beckham with then unknown Keira Knightley.

Earlier this year, he was nominated for an Emmy and won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Elvis in a TV movie of the same name.

You can also see him in the new Tom Cruise blockbuster sequel Mission Impossible III with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Laurence Fishburne and even Felicity star Keri Russell who he will be co-starring with again in the upcoming film August Rush, along with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Finding Neverland star Freddie Highmore.

You can read his recent interview with Out magazine here. He talks about the gay characters he’s played in the past, being typecast, his gay fanbase, and Irish homophobia.

Here’s a sampler from the interview:

Do you have a sense of your gay fans? Are they vocal?

Sometimes. They’re always fucking vocal. It’s a very important market when you’re an actor. Essentially you’re selling yourself and if you can garner a gay audience, gay men and women who love your films, then straights will follow.
