Brokeback Mountain Coming To Broadway?

Posted under Broadway, Brokeback Mountain, Hugh Jackman, James Marsden by Chris Evans on Tuesday 24 July 2007 at 12:02 pm

Rumors are swirling that there is an effort to bring the massive hit and critically acclaimed cowboy romance Brokeback Mountain to Broadway. There is no word as to whether it will be adapted as a play or as a musical, but there are two stars who are supposedly being approached to star in the Broadway adaptation. X-Men co-stars Hugh Jackman and James Marsden have been named as the two actors they are shooting for to star as Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist in the weeper love story. Considering the hopeful casting choices, I’m going to go ahead and assume it’s being adapted into a musical.

We know Hugh Jackman for his singing from his Tony winning performance in The Boy From Oz, where he played gay singer and songwriter Peter Allen, and James Marsden just recently showed off his impressive vocal chops as Corny Collins in Hairspray. Both have sung previously, and both have played gay roles before–Marsden played a gay man in the movie Heights, but would they take on such an acclaimed and successful film, knowing the difficulty of duplicating the success and praise when brought to a stage, especially to music?

I could definitely see the show being a commercial hit–especially with such hunky co-stars, many will turn out just to see them kiss on stage–and I can’t imagine the stage door frenzy after each show. But I’m skeptical as to whether this story will translate well to the stage (I mean…it takes place on a mountain…what about the sheep?) and whether it will work as a musical. But then again, I was wary of The Color Purple on Broadway, and that turned out to be a wonderful play. Time will tell if any of these rumors are even true.

Jake Gyllenhaal Coming To Broadway?

Posted under Broadway, Celebrities, Jake Gyllenhaal by Chris Evans on Wednesday 13 June 2007 at 2:30 pm

According to People magazine, Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal could possibly be heading to Broadway this fall. The New York Post was the first to report the news, after Jake had a private reading of the work last week.

The play in question is a political drama called Farragut North.

Gyllenhaal would play an idealistic communications director for an unorthodox presidential candidate said to be based on 2004 Democratic candidate Howard Dean. The play’s title refers to the Washington, D.C., metro stop located near the offices of several lobbyists, the Post reports.

According to The New York Times, the show’s creator, Brooklyn-based Beau Willimon, 29, is “a playwright [who] worked on Howard Dean’s presidential campaign.”

This is so exciting! I wonder if I show up to the stage door in a cowboy hat and boots if he’ll mistake me for Heath Ledger and bend over as a reflex.

Fresh Links: Lindsay Lohan Gets Abducted

Posted under Broadway, Hugh Jackman, Jesse Metcalfe, Julia Roberts, Lindsay Lohan, Movies, Television, Weeds by Chris Evans on Saturday 18 November 2006 at 11:34 pm

Lindsay Lohan is getting abducted by a serial killer.

Hugh Jackman is definitely no amateur, but he wants to play one.

Thank you Jesus! Showtime greenlit a third season of Weeds.

I prefer the sequel, but nonetheless Sister Act is coming to Broadway.

The crazy bitches from Flavor of Love 2 are going to charm school

Wtf. Robert De Niro and 50 Cent are co-starring in a movie about Katrina.

Desperate Housewives hottie Jesse Metcalfe is “loaded“.

The first Inside Man underwhelmed me but maybe the sequel will be better.

My girl Julia Roberts is taking up knitting.

Breath of Fresh Ink Meets Constantine Maroulis

Posted under American Idol, Broadway, Celebrities, Constantine Maroulis by Chris Evans on Sunday 8 October 2006 at 2:24 am

So last night was yet another amazing night in New York City. Nancy and I met Constantine Maroulis from American Idol 4 who’s currently being featured in The Wedding Singer on Broadway.

Don’t worry–we didn’t actually see the show. You’d have to pay US to sit through two and a half hours of The Wedding Singer (the movie OR the play)–we just went to see Constantine and wow was it worth it. He looks JUST as hot in person as he does on TV and he was super sweet.

I asked him for a hug and Nancy asked him for his number. We’re not THAT psycho though…some other bitch showed up in a wedding vale.

Here’s some pics (no comments on how bad I look):

I’m a little bitter that he looks hotter in Nancy’s pic than he does in mine…but Constantine made up for that by putting a heart next to his signature on my Village Voice cover (he didn’t do that for those other bitches!!).

Stephen Lynch is in it too for those interested (even though he unfortunately wasn’t there last night).

Oh, one more thing before I go…randomly as we were trying to hail Nancy a cab…Spider Man walked towards us..so we took a picture.

Don’t ask. It’s New York City.

Breaking News: Anna Nicole Smith’s Son Suddenly Dies

Posted under Broadway, Television by Chris Evans on Monday 11 September 2006 at 7:33 am

Anna Nicole Smith’s 20 year old son suddenly died 3 days after the Playboy Playmate gave birth to her second child, a girl. I remember seeing the kid on her E! reality show and always felt quite sorry for him.

No cause of death has been figured out (either that or it has been figured out and just isn’t being released) but Smith’s attorney says alcohol and drugs were not involved (somehow you don’t know what the cause is yet you know what it isn’t).

Seems a lot of sad deaths are happening this week.

Grey’s On TNT, Pfeiffer In Hairspray, Jesse Metfalfe Back On Housewives?

Posted under Broadway, Celebrities, Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, Jesse Metcalfe, John Travolta, Movies, Music, Queen Latifah, Television, Web by Chris Evans on Monday 17 July 2006 at 12:01 pm

Okay everyone. This is going to be a MEGA post, so bear with me.

Three-time Oscar nominated actress (and the bitchin-ess Catwoman ever) Michelle Pfeiffer is slated to star as the villain in the highly publicized and anticipated screen version of Broadway musical Hairspray. Pfeiffer joins an all-star cast that includes Oscar nominees Queen Latifah and John Travolta, as well as teen star Amanda Bynes.

The film will start filming on Sept. 5, and will most likely be released in December of 2007.

In other Broadway news, Grammy winner R&B star Usher will join the cast of Chicago for his Broadway debut starting August 22–lasting through early October. He’ll be playing conniving lawyer Billy Flynn (the role played by Richard Gere in the movie).

He says:

“I have always admired Broadway actors for their showmanship, dedication and focus that goes into performing live on stage every night. Being on Broadway allows you to connect to audiences in a whole new way that’s different from music and movies.”

With syndication rights already bought up for ABC’s hit Desperate Housewives, the network should be grinning from ear to ear now that its other hit Grey’s Anatomy will be giving shared syndication rights to both TNT and the Oxygen network. TNT has the rights to play the show during the day, while Oxygen is given the post-6 PM slot.

Rumor has it Oxygen paid about 700,000 per episode of Emmy nominee and Golden Globe winner Grey’s Anatomy while TNT paid about 300,000 to foot the rest of the million dollar bill. The episodes should begin airing in about 2009, when the show is in its fifth season.

In other Grey’s Anatomy news, star Kate Walsh is teaming up with Golden Globe nominee John Cusack in a new adaptation of Stephen King novel 1408. The film also stars Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson.

It starts filming before the end of the summer in the U.K.

Disney channel That’s So Raven star Raven Symone has signed on to remake the 80s classic Adventures In Babysitting. The original, which opened in 1987, starred Elisabeth Shue, Vincent D’Onofrio, Bradley Whitford, and Anthony Rapp.

There is no information as to when the film will start production, as it’s only at the script stage.

Oscar winner Holly Hunter is in negotiations to star in a new TNT drama series Saving Grace, while Golden Globe nominee Michael Keaton will star in the six-hour mini-series The Company.

According to Hollywood Reporter:

In “Grace,” Hunter will star as a jaded police officer who is offered the chance to redeem her life after she encounters an angel. Signing on to the project would give Hunter her first TV series role.

Also, The Practice star Lara Flynn Boyle is starring in the original movie The House Next Door (I’m laughing too), and Desperate Housewives star Jay Harrington is in a new movie with Scrubs beauty Sarah Chalke called Why I Wore Lipstick To My Mastectomy.

***

Actress Regina King (who should’ve been thrown an Oscar nod for Ray) will be featured in episodes of FOX drama 24. She will join as a heretofore unseen Palmer sister Angela, a powerful lawyer with an advocacy group.

For those of you pining for some heat over on Wisteria Lane, season one’s hot gardener and John Tucker Must Die star Jesse Metcalfe says it’s possible he will return to the show that launched his career, Desperate Housewives. The red hot actor says:

“I’ve been very selective and I’ve turned down half a dozen things,” he said. “Some things came right away after I was done shooting. I came back into town and shot a few episodes of ‘Housewives‘. There’s been some talk of me coming back for a third season. I’m weighing that out.”

I’m not sure about everyone else, but I really, really hate Perez Hilton (or whatever his real name is). Though his site is fun to read sometimes, other times it makes me sick that someone like him sits atop gay blogging and online gossip. His taste in music and movies is that of a 13 year old girl, he spends his life ragging on every celebrity he can think of but then professing his “love” for them, and a few weeks ago he had the nerve to seriously call Mariska Hargitay and her husband Peter Hermann C-List celebrities (which of course prompted hundreds of angry comments defending the Golden Globe winner).

The self-proclaimed “Queen of the Media” is yet another bad example of male homosexuality at its worst. According to Perez, the more beautiful you are the more famous you should be, the more famous you are the more so awesomely fabulous you are, girl!! Welcome to Bulimia Lane. Now that that rant has run its course, here’s a picture of the culprit with Full House stars Bob Saget and John Stamos to promote a performance John is having with the Beach Boys.

Of course, John looks so adorable in the picture–but what’s up with Bob Saget? Should I be handing him a bottle of Maalox or a voucher for the nearest rehab facility?

And as for Dave Navarro and Tommy Lee’s exchange of DNA at the recent Rock Star: Supernova promotional party–I’m personally aroused and disgusted all at the same time. I guess that’s their charm.

Julia Roberts Ends Broadway Run With Old Dress

Posted under Broadway, Celebrities, Julia Roberts by Chris Evans on Thursday 22 June 2006 at 9:55 pm

Julia Roberts looked stunning as she arrived for her final performance on Broadway recently.

She wore a slinky red dress teamed with high heeled stilettos, with her hair in a classic up do. She has been performing in the play Three Days of Rain for the last few months.

However, if you looked closer the 38 year old actress was wearing the same Vera Tam dress that she wore seven years ago to the Notting Hill premiere.

Roberts raised eyebrows at the time when to waved to the crowd exposing unshaven armpits.

At the time fashion writers expressed horror that she would appear in public with unruly hair escaping from her armpits. Roberts said at the time:” You’d think it was like a chinchilla I had under there the way the world responded.”

Just for the record, Roberts did not raise her arms to wave to the crowds this weekend to prove if she has returned to more conventional grooming.

And now some vintage Julia Roberts.

Julia Roberts Glad She Did Broadway Show

Posted under Broadway, Celebrities, Julia Roberts by Chris Evans on Sunday 11 June 2006 at 10:54 am

Julia Roberts has insisted her critically panned Broadway debut was worth the huge upheaval in her personal life.

The Pretty Woman star took time out of her successful movie career in 2004 to spend time with her cameraman husband Daniel Moder and their young children Phinnaeus Walter and Hazel Patricia at their New Mexico ranch. Before signing up to appear in Three Days Of Rain, Roberts confessed she needed “an exemplary reason to leave the house” but, having done the play, she’s glad she turned her life upside down for the stage.

She says, “It’s always worth a little upheaval to make a dream come true. And I wanted this so badly. Danny was the one who encouraged me to do this show. I mean, I probably wouldn’t have had the nerve if not for him. He kept saying ‘Do it, do it, do it.’ I told him that our lives would change. We’d have to move to New York. And what about the kids? He said, ‘Let’s just do it. We’ll figure it out.’ And we did. Somehow.”

Television Tidbits: Diddy’s Raisin, Emmys, Housewives Ratings

Posted under Awards, Broadway, Desperate Housewives, Emmy Awards, Grey's Anatomy, Television by Chris Evans on Wednesday 24 May 2006 at 6:17 am

P. Diddy–P. Daddy, wait, Diddy–shit–I have no clue what he’s calling himself these days. Either way, he’s bringing the Tony award winning cast of the Broadway show “A Raisin In The Sun” to the silver screen. Honestly, it’s embarassing that he has any involvement with such a legendary play, but hey–I guess if it means more people’ll see the classic Lorraine Hansberry masterpiece–what the hell.

It was announced earlier this week that the hilarious late-night host Conan O’Brien will again be hosting the Emmy Awards on his home network NBC. It should be a fun evening–one question though. Why hasn’t Conan taken over the Tonight Show yet? I’m tired of the chin. Seriously.

After months of lagging behind Grey’s Anatomy in the ratings (largely due to a Superbowl boost), Desperate Housewives has finally gained back its Sunday night crown. Of course, it comes right when its announced that Grey’s is moving to Thursday nights. No word yet on what will be given the coveted post-Housewives slot.

Julia Roberts’ ‘Three Days of Rain’ Set For Screen

Posted under Broadway, Celebrities, Julia Roberts, Movies by Chris Evans on Tuesday 16 May 2006 at 12:39 am

Although it’s just getting so-so reviews on Broadway, producer Deborah Reinisch will bring the Julia Roberts-starring play Three Days of Rain to the big screen.

Never mind middling and occasionally dismissive reviews, the Broadway drama Three Days of Rain is on its way to the movies. The drama got big box office in its debut thanks to the casting of Julia Roberts in one of the central roles.

Producer Deborah Reinisch has acquired the film rights, and she’ll produce and direct the eventual film. The movie is set both in 1960 and 1995, and it centers on a brother, sister and childhood friend coming to terms with the death of the brother and sister’s father.

No word yet on whether Julia Roberts would be interested in taking on the film version. If not, there’s already a natural alternative. Patricia Clarkson played the role when the show ran off Broadway.

Roberts has been absent from the movie screen for a while, since the birth of her twins in late 2004, but she’s coming back in a big way. She’s voiced a role in Ant Bully and is the title voice in the new adaptation of Charlotte’s Web. Roberts goes full screen again next in Charlie Wilson’s War, opposite Tom Hanks.
