Christina Aguilera Dominates Grammy Coverage

Christina Aguilera only won ONE Grammy on Sunday, her win wasn’t even television, and she didn’t even perform a song off her own record, yet she still managed to stay on everybody’s minds long after the ceremony was over.

Say hello to this week’s Entertainment Weekly

And then People magazine. Shawoosh. All the haters to the left.

Yup, that’s right. Christina Aguilera right next to the LEGENDS. Clive Davis and Whitney Houston. Hey Kat! You look damn good, girl.

Papa Knowles must be slippin’. I don’t see Miss Beyonce anywhere. Oops. She’s sitting at home twirling her weave, fawning over her boring ass Sports Illustrated cover while Jennifer Hudson is picking out what dress she’s going to wear when she goes up to accept her Academy Award.

Christina Aguilera Wows At The Grammys

Posted under Awards, Christina Aguilera, Grammy Awards, Music, Television by Chris Evans on Monday 12 February 2007 at 5:13 am

After stumbling vocally at Clive Davis' pre-Grammy bash Saturday night, I was bracing myself from the moment I saw Christina Aguilera make her diva-like entrance to the stage during the Grammy telecast. I knew she was singing the James Brown classic "It's Man's Man's Man's World" from a Gold Derby tip-off, but was afraid it was going to be a strained mess. Christina Aguilera took the stage, and it was over. Forget about Beyonce, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears–this girl mopped the floor with all of their wigs, took names and didn't stop to apologize. Not since Mary J. Blige's jaw-dropping performance of "No More Drama" back in 2002 have I been so moved by a live television performance. Everyone around me was speechless.

Entertainment Weekly raved "Everyone knows Aguilera's got pipes — but probably not even her most devoted fans could've imagined her channeling James Brown with the magnetic fervor she displayed tonight." They go on to say "Crouched on the floor, clutching the mic stand, and belting full-throttle from beginning to end, Xtina didn't so much sing ''It's a Man's Man's Man's World'' as she did unleash it on her mesmerized audience. This is the 2007 Grammy performance to remember; the Godfather of Soul would be proud."

People magazine held a post-telecast poll in which people voted on the performance, and 90% of those that voted claimed there "ain't no other woman like Xtina".  The official Grammy press release boasted "The mighty Aguilera delivered a memorable, perhaps legendary, performance of James Brown's 'It's A Man's World'." The Post-Gazette said "In a tribute to James Brown, Aguilera, in dazzling white suit, offered a scorching (and screaming) version of "It's a Man's Man's World."

I enjoyed most of the performances Sunday night, especially that of the laughing all the way to the Grammy press room Dixie Chicks, but the Philadelphia Inquirer was less than impressed than I–with the exception of one woman.  "Unfortunately, few of the performers made the most of their time, with many of the production numbers rehashing hits of decades ago, as if the music industry's best prescription for a troubled future was to listlessly revive the past.Exceptions included a knockout performance by Christina Aguilera on James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World."

After she tore up the stage with the scorching number where she did justice to the late great soul singer–emulating him like a pro, the entire stadium lept to their feet.  Jamie Foxx and Dixie Chick Martie Maguire were among those who looked floored by the electrifying performance.  You could read Jamie's lips as he smirked and said "That's the shit right there", and Martie turned to the person next to her and said "Wow."

Within hours of the telecast, Aguilera's now Grammy winning album Back to Basics (she won her fourth for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Ain't No Other Man") shot from near #400 all the way to #23 on Amazon.com, and I would say expect that same kind of jump on the Billboard chart come next week.

Often criticized for her emotionless oversinging as she is for her sexy image, Aguilera surprised even me, a long time fan.  She pulled this performance from the depths of her soul and spilled it all over that stage like it was her dying day.   I was so speechless and floored by the performance it took me a few seconds to realize I had tears in my eyes.  James Brown is smiling in his grave.

Grammy Nominations…I’m Speechless.

Posted under Awards, Carrie Underwood, Christina Aguilera, Dixie Chicks, Grammy Awards, Justin Timberlake, Mary J. Blige, Music, Pink by Chris Evans on Thursday 7 December 2006 at 8:29 pm

I’m speechless right now. Absolutely speechless. The production on Back to Basics is stellar and it almost brings tears to my eyes that the work of DJ Premier, Linda Perry, Mark Ronson, and obviously Christina Aguilera is going to go unrecognized.

I highly doubt that Christina will win Best Pop Vocal Album, and she may win Female Pop Vocal but she’s won that before, and it makes me sick that she’s yet to be recognized for something other than her voice, when second rate artistry like Beyonce’s can win Grammys easier than Andy Dick could get into Lindsay Lohan’s panties.

The truly sad moment will be if Christina doesn’t even win either of the two awards that she’s nominated for.

This is just a very sad day.

I know people will say I’m being too dramatic, but I’m just having an emotional reaction right now to the feeling of snubbery.

Here are the two categories she was nominated in (which are the same ones she was nominated for with Stripped):

Best Pop Vocal Album
*Christina Aguilera - Back To Basics
*James Blunt - Back to Bedlam
*Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint - The River In Reverse
*John Mayer - Continuum
*Justin Timberlake - FutureSex/LoveSounds

Best Female Pop Vocal Performance
*Christina Aguilera - Ain’t No Other Man
*Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten
*Sheryl Crow - You Can Close Your Eyes
*Pink - Stupid Girls
*KT Tunstall - Black Horse And The Cherry Tree

With that said, I’m very happy for the other people who were generously nominated.

*The lovely Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul Mary J. Blige leads the nominations with a whopping 8 nods.

*Pink was nominated for Stupid Girls (a nomination that SHOULD’VE gone to Who Knew).

*Justin Timberlake received four nominations for his good album FutureSex/LoveSounds, even if it’s all attributed to ripping off Prince (5 noms) and the talents of Timbaland (who btw, is not nominated for his production work).

*The rebellious jezebels the Dixie Chicks received five nominations for some of their best work to date on Taking The Long Way.

*And best of all..congrats to first time nominee Carrie Underwood on her two nominations! Best New Artist and Best Female Country Vocal Performance!

Jesus Take The Wheel was also nominated for two awards for the songwriters.

You can view the entire list of nominees here.

The Grammys will air on CBS on February 11.

Grammy Nominations: Justin vs. Christina

Posted under Awards, Celebrities, Christina Aguilera, Grammy Awards, Justin Timberlake, Music by Chris Evans on Wednesday 6 December 2006 at 10:52 pm

So it’s that time of year again, ladies and gentleman. The 49th annual Grammy Award nominations come out Thursday morning at 11:30 AM (ET) and it’s seeming like a bland Beyonce song (Yeah..Deja Vu). Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera are most likely going to be yet again up against each other in the Pop Vocal Album category like they were years ago when Justin’s debut album Justified was nominated along with Christina’s sophomore effort Stripped.

That year, Justin took the award–his album had better reviews, though Aguilera had sold more copies. This time around, both of their albums are pretty neck and neck with the critics but Justin has had bigger hits and bigger sales due to the commerciality of his album.

Some are saying John Mayer is the dark horse to win, as Aguilera and Timberlake could split the vote, giving him an easy shot at the Grammy, but I still think one of the two former Mouseketeers has it in the bag.

I’m hoping and praying that Christina takes the award, as she’s yet to win a single award for her albums–only for collaborations and vocal performance, then of course the one for Best New Artist. Justin’s album is good–but honestly pales in comparison to the creativity that went into Back to Basics, and let’s not kid ourselves here–FutureSex/LoveSounds is essentially a child of Prince.

Unfortunately I’ll be in class giving a presentation when the nominations come out but I’m JETTING to the nearest computer once it’s over to find out if Miss Aguilera garnered herself some well deserved nominations.

Kelly Clarkson Talks About New Tour, Album, and Idol

Posted under American Idol, Celebrities, Grammy Awards, Kelly Clarkson, Music by Chris Evans on Tuesday 6 June 2006 at 5:48 pm

Kelly Clarkson is decked out in black: skintight pants, jeweled stilleto-heeled boots and a blouse that plunges dangerously low. Camera-wielding fans buzz about as the singer sweeps past a velvet rope and disappears into a happening nightclub.

“OK, let’s do that again,” a photographer says. Clarkson and the camera-wielders back up and resume their spots.

It’s midday, midweek and Clarkson isn’t out clubbing. She’s posing for photos to promote her new partnership with a brand of vitamin-enhanced water. The daylong shoot is wedged between cutting demos for her new record and preparing for her national summer tour, which begins June 30 in West Palm Beach, Fla.

When Clarkson does get free time, she’s not one to hit the clubs, she says.

“I’m like 80 in my mind,” says the spunky 24-year-old, who talks like an auctioneer on caffeine. “My downtime is literally downtime.”

It’s been a whirlwind four years for the pop star, who became instantly famous in 2002 when she won the first “American Idol” title.

Clarkson’s debut album, “Thankful,” earned double-platinum status, and her multiplatinum follow-up, “Breakaway,” netted two Grammy awards earlier this year. She’s now at work on her third album, due in early 2007.

The album in progress, she says, is a departure from her last two records, with more soulful smoothness and a rock ‘n’ roll edge.

“It’s like a throwback to Janis Joplin, Sly, some of (the new songs) are a little Prince-ish,” Clarkson says. “It’s still got the whole rock-pop vibe, but it’s kind of got certain songs, too, that have an extreme amount of soul in them as well.”

The actual assembly of the album will have to wait, though. Clarkson is about to embark on her “Addicted” summer tour, and she promises it will be like nothing she’s ever done before. Expect “huge surprises,” she says.

“People are going to be floored,” she says, declining to reveal any details. “It’s a more musical show, like I always do, but the things we’re bringing in, like all the video stuff and different things, are major ones.”

Clarkson plans to perform tracks from her forthcoming record, where she “explores a more straight-ahead rock side,” says her manager, Jeff Rabhan.

“This is an opportunity to test out some material and see what really works and feels right,” he says. “This definitely is going to be the biggest show she’s ever done, in terms of audience and production and Kelly’s going to do what she does best, which is knock the vocals out of the park.”

Before the tour starts, however, Clarkson has other obligations to tend to - like this day’s photo shoot. She joined forces with Glaceau’s vitaminwater to promote her favorite flavor (”Focus, the pink one.”) and encourage young people to make healthier choices.

Clarkson is also involved with the company’s “vitaminschool” program, where high-school students prepare healthy meals for a chance to win a $100,000 scholarship. Clarkson is one of four judges who will help choose the winner in New York on June 8.

With her success, she says, she feels she wants to also focus on work that helps others.

“I’ve done well enough to where I’m fine for the rest of my life,” Clarkson says. “So my whole goal now is I just want to be part of things that are positive and make a difference.”

Besides vitaminwater, Clarkson works with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She’ll donate a portion of her “Addicted” ticket sales to Komen’s Race for the Cure initiative.

Adjusting to overnight fame has been “pretty hard core,” Clarkson says. “Normal” outings, like going to the grocery store, are a thing of the past. Even a wig and glasses don’t help.

“People notice everything. They notice my chin,” she says. “Three hundred sixty-three days out of the year, I’m fine, I love it. It’s hard but at the same time it’s a blessing.”

Clarkson says she relies on her Christian beliefs to keep her grounded.

“My central foundation is my faith,” she says. “That’s just how I keep it, like, sane.”

She’s also learned to set some limits and take time off. But not enough time to date, she says. Clarkson is single and says she’ll probably stay that way for a while.

“I give up. Is that bad?” she says. “It’s just too hard. It sounds so cliche to say `I’m too busy,’ but I really am.”

Not that she’s complaining. Before “American Idol,” when she was working as a cocktail waitress, Clarkson dreamed of being busy with a music career.

She left some wondering about her feelings for the show when she didn’t mention “Idol” while accepting her Grammy awards in February. Clarkson says she has only fond thoughts about the program.

“People have the wrong idea, like I don’t want to talk about it,” she says. “I think it’s a great thing. It was obviously the best way for me to come into the business and it’s just a great opportunity for everyday normal people. It’s like a Cinderella story every day.”

And with that, the photographer beckons Clarkson. A stylist carefully smooths the pop star’s hair as she walks off, back to the “nightclub” and the flash bulbs.

‘American Idol’ Hits New Ratings High Note

Posted under 2006 Olympics, American Idol, Grammy Awards, Law & Order: SVU, Television by Chris Evans on Wednesday 22 March 2006 at 8:44 pm

The amateur pop singers of “American Idol” hit another ratings high note on Tuesday as Fox television’s talent-contest sensation scored its biggest audience yet for a performance episode of the show.

A whopping 33.2 million viewers tuned in to watch the remaining 11 finalists sing for a shot at a recording contract and instant fame during the two-hour broadcast, Nielsen Media Research reported on Wednesday.

That tally was nearly 2 million viewers higher than the combined Tuesday night average posted by all five competing networks. And it surpassed last week’s record audience for a performance episode on “American Idol,” now in its fifth season.

The premiere show this season, featuring auditions by would-be contestants, drew a slightly bigger audience (35.5 million viewers). And the second-season finale in May 2003, when Ruben Studdard was crowned the winner, stands as the most watched of any “American Idol” episode (38.1 million viewers).

Idol,” airing on two or three nights a week this year, has grown into a gargantuan hit for Fox and dominated U.S. television in prime time, overshadowing the hottest series of rival networks and even big-event broadcasts like the Grammy Awards and Winter Olympics.

The new CBS commando drama “The Unit” managed a solid showing against the “Idol” in its third week on Tuesday, averaging 15.2 million viewers to rank as the night’s second most watched show in prime time. NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” was third with 13.6 million viewers.

In the season to date, Walt Disney Co.-owned ABC is No. 1 in the ratings for viewers aged 18 to 49, the group most prized by advertisers. CBS and Fox, a unit of News Corp. Ltd., are tied for second place, trailed by NBC, which is owned by General Electric Co.

Kelly Clarkson’s Breakaway Success

Posted under American Idol, Awards, Celebrities, Grammy Awards, Kelly Clarkson, Music, Television by Chris Evans on Monday 13 February 2006 at 11:17 am

Kelly Clarkson

February 13, 2006

You probably already knew that Kelly Clarkson was big, and this was confirmed at the Grammys last week, when Clarkson snagged two awards, including best pop vocal album. Nowadays, Clarkson is bigger than Britney (although, that’s not saying much), and even bigger than Christina Aguilera and Avril Lavigne, who have written songs for her albums. Anyone who doubts the power of our first ”American Idol” winner should grab an album and start counting.

While big pop stars of the past decade — such as Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake — have managed to get four singles from one album on radio pop charts, Clarkson just released her sixth radio track in Boston, all from her disc ”Breakaway.” Five of her six singles have been local No. 1’s, and her latest hit, ”Walk Away,” is climbing to the top. In that sense, Clarkson is even bigger than Mariah Carey, whose ”Emancipation of Mimi” was honored with three Grammys but is responsible only for five radio tracks, including the latest, ”Fly Like a Bird.”

David Corey, music director at KISS 108 (107.9 FM), says Clarkson’s success is ”very rare.” The pop music station just started playing a sixth song by Gwen Stefani, from her album ”Love. Angel. Music. Baby.,” but Corey says a few of Stefani’s songs, such as ”Luxurious,” have had mediocre success on the air. ”With Kelly, all of hers have been huge hits,” he says.

How does Clarkson’s ”Breakaway” stack up? Corey says he can think of only a few other albums that had six songs successfully hit radio. They were made by artists with staying power, he says, the ones who are big enough to go by their first names.

Carrie Underwood’s Next Single Chosen?

Posted under American Idol, Awards, Carrie Underwood, Celebrities, Charts, Grammy Awards, Music, Television by Chris Evans on Saturday 11 February 2006 at 7:11 pm

Carrie Underwood

FEBRUARY 9 - Associated Press

Reigning American Idol winner Carrie Underwood has had her single Jesus Take The Wheel at number one for an amazing five weeks atop the Hot Country Songs chart, and her debut album Some Hearts has sold almost 2.4 million copies domestically. She’s been doing pretty well for herself since her American Idol win–nearly beating out Madonna for the number one slot, and garnering the highest first week sales for any solo female country artist in history.

Wednesday night, Carrie, although not nominated, was seen on the Grammy green carpet, as well as working the Grammy after-parties.

Reporter Janice Kelly from the Associated Press ran into Carrie as she was on her way to Kanye West’s Grammy After Party, and asked Carrie what was next for her in the coming months.

“I’m doing a little bit of touring in the next few months, including performing with Heart in Las Vegas which I’m so excited about.”

Carrie danced to “Gold Digger” as finalist Mario Vazquez kissed her hand while Carrie giggled.

“No video shoot dates have been set yet, but Before He Cheats is probably going to be the next single off of the album, it’s gotten the greatest response from the fans and from the critics. In all the reviews and things, Before He Cheats is the one they seem to like the most. I was kind of afraid of putting that song on the album because I thought people might be offended, but everyone seems to be taking it as tongue-in-cheek as it was meant to be. So that’s exciting.”

No word on if Carrie has any plans for a tour yet, she’s apparently busy watching this season of American Idol.

“I’ve been watching, yes. It’s really addicting! I never watched it before I auditioned.”
