Janet Comments On Feud With Madonna

HX: I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but there’s an Internet war between Janet and Madonna fans. I know you and Madonna had some beef in the ’90s, but do you think the heat between Madonna and Janet fans has any validity?
Janet: No—I didn’t know this was going on. [Laughs]
HX: They argue, make videos and, of course, it’s mostly the gay fans. So people are curious: What are your thoughts on Madonna now?
Janet: I think she’s done wonderful things. She’s done great things in her career, in her life, and more power to her. I think fans will always be that way—always. They’re just incredibly loyal and they love you so much that if anyone says anything remotely negative, they’re there to just immediately jump on them. It’ll always be that way—very loyal.
You can read the rest of the interview over at HX’s website.

Jimmy Kimmel Is Fucking Ben Affleck

Earlier this year, Sarah Silverman made a video with Matt Damon called “I’m Fucking Matt Damon” as a joke, poking fun at her boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel. Jimmy has made a response video with Matt’s best friend, Ben Affleck. It’s fucking priceless.

The Gayness of Javier Bardem

In light of hottie Javier Bardem’s recent Oscar win, Popnography decided to look back at Out magazine’s 2001 interview with the actor, when he was promoting the biopic Before Night Falls, about gay Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas.
Here’s some interesting quotes and some hot pictures to boot.
> ON THE REVELATORY FILMING EXPERIENCE: “I can now grasp how a man could look at another man and immediately want to lift his legs to Jesus.”
> ON JOHNNY DEPP AS TRANSVESTITE PRISON GUARD BON BON: “When I first saw Bon Bon on the set, I didn’t realize it was Johnny. I just looked at this girl with the heavy makeup and the big behind and thought, man, I could get into that. I still felt such a way after I realized it was Johnny. He’s such a beautiful guy — who wouldn’t want to make love with him? And I know a lot of real girls who would kill to have Bon Bon’s ass.”
> ON FAKING IT: “I’m not a homosexual, but if I have to kiss a man, I have to feel the desire. Otherwise I will be lying, in a way that is perhaps worse than the lying that gay actors convey when, offscreen, they say they are straight. It’s worse because I am being fake to an audience. I had to find in myself the man who would like to make love with another man.”

Ellen Speaks Out About Gay Hate Crime
Says Ellen:
We must change our country and we can do it with our behavior, we can do it with the messages we send our children, we can do it with our vote. This is an election year and there’s a lot of talk about change. I think one thing we can change is hate. Check on who you’re voting for, and does that person really truly believe that we are all equal under the law? And if you’re not sure, change your vote. We deserve better. My heart goes out to everybody involved in this horrible, horrible incident.
I’m so glad Ellen talked about this because it’s such a tragic situation, and I was extremely upset to see the mainstream media virtually ignore it.

Fresh Links: Michelle, Ashton, and A Bird-Costume

Michelle Pfeiffer is still lookin’ fierce at the ripe old age of 49. Damn, what is it with Ashton Kutcher and all these older sexy women?
T.R. Knight revealed he’ll be a bridesmaid when his BFF (or fag hag as I like to call her) Katherine Heigl gets married in December to singer Josh Kelley.
Lindsay Lohan seems to be filming some kind of commercial involving Superheroes. No one knows what the hell it is, but she looks damn hot if you ask me.
After reviving the fledgling Batman franchise, Christian Bale is now going to be starring in the Terminator. Since, you know, Arnold is just a tad busy.

Pete Wentz is yet again talking about how much he wishes he were gay. Well, sweetie you seem to make out with men any change you get so maybe a part of you is?
Katherine Heigl’s getting a lot of flack after calling her hit film Knocked Up sexist and the George/Izzie plotline on Grey’s Anatomy a “ratings ploy”. But girlfriend is 100% right. Keep it real!
Now that the writer’s strike has paralyzed network television, it seems CBS is going to fill the gap with episodes of Showtime’s Weeds and Dexter. But of course, the edited versions.
Jake Gyllenhaal has been tapped to play Hall of Famer Joe Namath in an upcoming Biopic. Hm, will this be Jake’s road to Oscar gold?

Daniel Craig: I Want To Go Nude

On Getting Naked In The Next Bond: “I’d go totally nude. I’ve got nothing to hide, and after all, we ask the girls to reveal almost all, so why not the men?”
On His Famous Blue Trunks Scene: “Did I know the trunk thing would be such a big deal? Yeah. I saw it on a huge billboard in Hollywood and people were screaming. It did make me feel rather nervous.”
Yes, Daniel! More nude men please.

Fresh Links: Marcia & Her Hubby Go Shopping

Due to the writers strike, the actresses of Desperate Housewives are currently out of work. Marcia Cross and her husband took the extra time and went shopping.
Johnny Depp is looking gorgeous and hobo chic as always in NYC at a dinner outing with friends. I can’t wait to see Sweeney Todd!
Hotness galore from Zachary Quinto on a recent episode of Heroes. I’ve heard people have seen him in the Village with his boyfriend. Come out, Zachary! It worked for Lance Bass.
Jessica Simpson might be finally ending the professional relationship between she and her father. He’s been her manager since she’s been in the business, and now she’s cuttin’ him loose.

Apparently Linda Hogan wants a divorce from wrestling star Hulk Hogan. This family is seriously so much drama. Brooke’s a tranny hot mess, Nick’s a drunken vehicular murderer, and now these two are going at it in court. Sheesh.
Are you as sick of hearing Meredith Grey’s voice as I am? Good news for you and me. Dr. Bailey is taking over temporarily as the narrarator of Grey’s Anatomy in an upcoming episode.
Seth Rogen has supposedly been slated to play the Green Hornet in the upcoming Justice League movie, so he’s been trying his best to bulk up. Don’t go all Mario Lopez, Seth! 0% body fat is NOT cute.
For whatever reason, Lindsay Lohan is coming out with yet ANOTHER shitty album. This time she might be teaming up with 50 Cent.

Ten Rising Gay Icons
Justin Timberlake

Any popular boy band has its fair share of a gay following, and ‘N Sync was not exception. Just the idea of four or five men traveling the world together on a bus, singing, dancing, and pelvic thrusting in matching outfits reeks of homoeroticism. But Justin Timberlake’s support from the gay community has followed him into his solo career. In 2002 he was chosen as one of The Advocate’s “10 Coolest Straight People.” When asked about when he first became aware of his gay following he replied, ” It was always there, and I have always been aware of it. I’m the kind of artist who wants to know all of his audience and what they’re about.” Back when Justin was still dating actress Cameron Diaz, she proclaimed Justin loved all of his fans–including the gay ones. “Justin loves all of his fans. People adore him across the board, and he’s not uncomfortable with any part of it. We love the gays!”
Justin’s fun pop music and his relationship with gay fave Britney Spears have surely helped him to stay in the hearts of gay men everywhere, which is why it was particularly ironic when his band mate Lance Bass came out of the closet in 2006. In response he said, “Lance is one of my great friends. I support him and wish him all the happiness in the world.” If further proof was needed Justin Timberlake is a gay icon, just go to any gay dance club on a Friday night and I’ll bet money you’re bound to hear screaming and see arms flying when SexyBack blasts through the speakers.
David Beckham

It’s rare that a male athlete is not only a gay icon, but that he openly embraces and encourages the adoration from the gay community. British soccer star David Beckham says he and his wife, Spice Girl Victoria “Posh” Beckham, fight over which one of them the gays love more. His good looks, chiseled body, and infectious charm have made him irresistible. In 2005 David moaned he thought Rugby player Gavin Henson was stealing his gay fans. “I think I have lost a lot of my gay fans to Welsh rugby star Gavin Henson. It is a shame as I really love them.”
He told Sports Illustrated, “Being a gay icon is a great honor for me. I’m quite sure of my feminine side, and I’ve not got a problem with that at all. These days it’s the norm, and it should be.” Even gay Lord of the Rings actor Sir Ian McKellen admires Beckham. “David Beckham is a beautiful man. He’s got a nice smile. I spoke to him at a party. He’s a gay icon and I know he likes it.” Beckham cemented his status as a gay icon when he and his wife Victoria did a racy photoshoot for W Magazine in which he wore nothing but women’s underwear.
Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera got her start in the business in the Mickey Mouse Club along with fellow pop stars Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears, and followed them into the pop world during the teen pop explosion of the 90’s. Her debut album sold 10 million copies in the US alone–at least some of those 10 million fans were bound to be gay. But it was her sophomore effort Stripped that really made the gay community fall in love with her. Recruiting lesbian rock singer/songwriter Linda Perry to help bring her vision to life, Aguilera made an eclectic album called “Stripped”–a title that both represented her newfound exhibitionism (see “Dirrty”) and the emotional nakedness found in the lyrical messages of the album.
The gay community was particularly stricken by the second single “Beautiful” which became an anthem for gay people–especially after the release of the music video. The video contained images of a transvestite getting dressed, and two gay men kissing and holding hands on a bench while people looked on in disgust. GLAAD (The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) awarded Aguilera for her positive images of LGBT people in her video. At the ceremony she said, “It’s a universal anthem for anyone and everyone who feels discriminated against just for being who they are.” Additionally, she commented on the song and video in The Advocate saying, “A lot of the gay people that write me say that me being true to myself and putting that in my songs is inspirational to them. So it’s almost my tribute to them, to let them feel that the turmoil they might be feeling because they feel like outsiders is OK.” Gay actor Robert Gant and director John Cameron Mitchell have both been quoted as saying the song moved them. Aguilera has even hinted that she may be bisexual. She told Zoo magazine, “I love experimenting with my sexuality. If that means girls then so be it. It would be wrong to hide this side of my personality.” To add to that, she is best friends with gay make-up artist Steve Solitto, whom she mentioned in her interview with The Advocate, and even had drag queens attend her recent baby shower.
In her interview with the Advocate, she talked about her relationships with gay people. “It used to be, the only good relationships I ever had were with gay men. That was before I met Jordy.” In that same interview, she makes it clear where she stands on gay marriage. “I never get people that think [being gay] is some kind of choice. You might be able to suppress it, but why would you live life that way? It really saddens me. I’ve heard stories of parents saying, “I’ll be there, but I can’t treat it as a real marriage.” Legally or not, it’s still a unity of two people’s love for each other.” The diva persona, the in your face sexuality reminiscent of Madonna, the messages of self-acceptance in her music, and her over-the-top performance style have made Aguilera a gay fave from the fiery red streaks to the assless chaps through the Rosie The Riveter bandana.
Jennifer Hudson & Beyonce

Singer Jennifer Hudson caught the eye of the gay audience when she appeared on American Idol and was preemptively eliminated–in one of the most shocking eliminations in the show’s 6 year history. Her big gospel belt and her crazy hair and outfits made her lovable. After leaving American Idol she began fading into oblivion until getting a call from the producers of Dreamgirls–who were making a film version of the Tony-winning Broadway musical. Jennifer landed the part of Effie White, and it began Jennifer’s journey to super stardom and Oscar glory.
Dreamgirls was already a gay fave the first time around and the movie version was no different. The movie–written and directed by gay Oscar nominee Bill Condon (Chicago)–was no different, as it was embraced by gay people all across America. They showed up in droves to cheer Miss Hudson on as she belted out that signature Dreamgirls number “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going”, which reportedly had people standing up in the theater in many cities.
When asked about her relationships with gay people in The Advocate she said, “[There are] about a hundred of ‘em [her gay friends]. Girls don’t like me. People say, ‘Oh, here comes Jennifer and a bunch of dudes.’ And gay guys always recognize me when I’m out. I love that. It happens so much — even if I have a hat and sunglasses on — that when I see a group of gay guys and they don’t, I think What’s wrong with them? I even asked Bill [Condon] about it. I said, ‘Why are all my friends gay men?’ And he said, ‘Oh, I know why.’ But then he still wouldn’t explain it to me!”
Starring alongside Jennifer in the hit film Dreamgirls was pop singer Beyonce Knowles who has quite the gay following of her own. Popular urban blogger Clay Cane talked about how he walked into a black gay club with a shirt that said “Beyonce Sucks” and the looks he got were so nasty he thought he was going to get lynched.
Beyonce’s upbeat dance music, her over the top costume choices, and her signature manic performance style are what have made her one of this generation’s top gay icons–particularly with black gay men. In an interview with Instinct magazine she talked about her gay uncle who died of AIDS. “I never mixed Christianity with how I felt (about him). I am about faith and spirituality more so than religion,” Knowles told the magazine. “Doing right by others and not judging.” Beyonce added she wouldn’t be upset if she had a gay son. “(I’d say) I love him for the person he is with no expectations back.”
Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway first appeared on the scene in Disney film The Princess Diaries alongside pop singer Mandy Moore and gay icon Julie Andrews, but really caught the attention of gay people when she played the wife of Jake Gyllenhaal in groundbreaking gay romance Brokeback Mountain, and later an assistant to Meryl Streep at a popular fashion magazine in The Devil Wears Prada.
Anne has said she’s considering becoming a nun because it’s a profession completely devoid of vanity–but wouldn’t be able to do it because of the Catholic church’s stance on gay people. “I do disagree with a couple of the stances of the Catholic Church. The most important one to me is because my older brother is gay. It’s important for me to be able to love him completely and freely and it’s important for me to spread beliefs in the world that are not going to limit people in their love.” Additionally Anne revealed in early 2006 that her brother was getting married. “My older brother, Mike, is getting married to his partner of five years, Josh, this fall. I’m gonna be a bridesmaid!”
Once, Anne and her friends were headed to a party at the Gramercy Park Hotel, but the doorman didn’t recognize her and they were turned away. Instead, Anne and her friends took a detour to a gay bar for men known as “bears” and reportedly were welcome with open arms.
In 2006, Anne was honored as one of the Out 100, a list of influential gays and gay friendlies compiled by Out magazine. With her big doe eyes, beautiful smile, and on-screen charisma and likability, Anne seems to have become this generation’s Julia Roberts. She just needs to find her Rupert Everett.
Kathy Griffin

Comedian Kathy Griffin has made a career out of ragging on celebrities, and it’s worked well for her, even if she claims after all these years to still be on the D-List.
Gay.com asked her about her two “main gays” who have been featured on her hit Emmy-winning reality show My Life on the D-List and she said, “Dennis and Tony really are my two best friends, a lot of my fans are gay and I do lots of gay events.”
She even featured rumored-to-be-gay figure skater Johnny Weir on her show, and he gave Kathy and her assistant a skating lesson. This was of course after Johnny made a joke about Kathy some saw as offensive. After Johnny skated poorly in the Winter Olympics he said, ‘’I had 827 e-mail fan mail messages from fans. ‘I told a good friend of mine about that, and he said, ‘Now you’re a D-level celebrity.’ I said, ‘Great, I’m Kathy Griffin.’ ” But once Johnny explained it was really a compliment they both kissed and made-up.
Kathy tore Everybody Loves Raymond star Patricia Heaton a new one for her negative comments toward gay people. “The whole gay issue, I gotta tell you–when I hear Patricia talking her bullshit and saying it’s not in the Bible that gay people should be together - those are the pieces of information that I can’t forget about. Patty Heaton has the gayest makeup person you’ve ever seen. I can’t get beyond it. It’s the hypocrisy.”
Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal became famous after starring in The Day After Tomorrow with Dennis Quaid and Emmy Rossum, but it was his starring role in Ang Lee film Brokeback Mountain that has made Jake Gyllenhaal the premiere male actor for audiences.
Anticipation was white hot for the film, which is the first high profile gay movie with known actors. Jake talked about a pivotal scene in the movie where he and Heath Ledger reunite after years of not seeing each other. “Heath almost broke my nose in [a kissing] scene. He grabs me and he slams me up against the wall and kisses me. And then I grab him and I slam him up against the wall and I kiss him. And we were doing take after take after take. I got the [bleep] beat out of me. We had other scenes where we fought each other and I wasn’t hurting as badly as I did after that one.”
The film was universally praised by critics, and earned both he and Heath Ledger Oscar nominations. The budget for the film was $14 million dollars and it went on to gross $180 million worldwide and $32 million on DVD.
And in an interview with Out magazine he addressed rumors that he might be bisexual, “You know it’s flattering when there’s a rumor that says I’m bisexual. It means I can play more kinds of roles. I’m open to whatever people want to call me. I’ve never really been attracted to men sexually, but I don’t think I would be afraid of it if it happened.”
Bree Van De Kamp

Usually it’s real people that are idolized by gays and lesbians everywhere but every once in a while a fictional character comes along that people just can’t get enough of. Desperate Housewives’ Bree Van De Kamp may be a Republican, religious, judgmental, neurotic, and a recovering homophobe, but most gay men that watch the show would categorize her as “fierce”. Not since Sex and the City’s Samantha Jones has a fictional character on a women’s program been so wholeheartedly embraced by gay men.
She can bake you cookies, cakes, rolls, muffins, sew and iron your clothes, perfect your garden, get your house spic and span, reupholster your furniture and clean your gutters. But don’t get it twisted–this domestic goddess is no sissy. She may be the perfect housewife but she’ll pop you with her shotgun in a hot second if you cross her. One of Bree’s most famous quotes is about her husband and possible infidelity. “When Rex started going to all those medical conferences, I wanted in the back of his mind that he had a loving wife at home with a loaded Smith & Wesson.”
And that may be exactly what draws women and gay men to her character. She posesses all the wonderful qualities we expect out of women, yet at the same time has the strength, confidence, and attitude we stereotypically expect from men. And it of course doesn’t hurt that she has a hot gay son.
Katherine Heigl

Some people might have recognized Heigl from the WB show Roswell, but most people know the name Katherine Heigl from ABC’s breakout drama Grey’s Anatomy which has become a television phenomenon, and won countless awards. Though Grey’s Anatomy does have a sizable gay fan base, it’s not the show alone that has made Heigl a fave with the gays. In late 2006, the national enquirer broke the news that a scuffle took place on the set of Grey’s Anatomy involving Isaiah Washington and Patrick Dempsey, in which Washington blurted out “I’m not your little faggot like T.R. [Knight].” Washington denied that he ever said it, and a few weeks later the buzz about incident had died down.
But at the Golden Globes this year, creator Shonda Rhimes was asked about what happened, and Washington stormed the mic saying “No, I did not call T.R. a faggot. It never happened.” There was an uncomfortable silence in the room, and you could see many of his co-stars put their heads down in shame. Access Hollywood interviewed Katherine after the incident and she sounded off in defense of her friend. “I’m going to be really honest right now, he needs to just not speak in public. Period. I’m sorry, that did not need to be said, I’m not okay with it.” She continued, “I don’t think [Washington] means it the way he comes off…But, T.R. is my best friend. I will throw down for that kid. I will beat you up. I will use every ounce of energy I have to take you down if you hurt his feelings.”
Since then Heigl has been seen as the coolest fag hag on television. Popular gay site AfterElton.com says “The triumph of Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl at this year’s Emmy Awards — not her win so much as the stylish way in which she managed to merge old-Hollywood glamour with diva-like moxie (it takes chutzpah, after all, to blurt out an expletive when hearing one’s name called, or to correct the robotic announcer who mangled its pronunciation) — indicates we just might have a new gay icon in the making.”

Darryl Stephens Quietly Comes Out

Noah’s Arc star Darryl Stephens has finally decided to step out of that transparent closet he’s been in since the show started. Up until now he’s vowed to not talk about his sexuality at all (which really is ineffective considering that always means you’re gay), but now I guess he’s done playing the hetero game.
He is featured in Out magazine’s Out 100.
And, in a year of revolving closet doors for TV actors, we can also offer one long-anticipated quiet confirmation: Noah’s Arc star Darryl Stephens (above), who has declined to discuss his sexuality while playing a series of nuanced gay roles. He doesn’t exactly talk about it, but he proudly joins the other queer honorees in our pages.
Well congrats Darryl on finally telling us what was already blatantly obvious. In other breaking news, Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Lopez are pregnant.
And when the hell is that Noah’s Arc movie coming out?
