Steven Spielberg Casts Katharine McPhee In ‘Oz’ Remake?

Posted under American Idol, Katharine McPhee, Movies by Chris Evans on Friday 2 June 2006 at 2:50 am

So last week Katharine McPhee confirmed that Steven Spielberg wants a meeting with her–about what no one really knows. But sources say it might have something to do with a “Wizard of Oz” remake that Spielberg and Bruckheimer have wanted to make.

It’s not clear exactly what his take on the film would be–if it would even be that same exact plot. Recently Spielberg acquired the rights to make a movie out of the musical “Wicked“, so it’s possible he’s trying to put a new take on the film–possibly mixing in the plot from “Wicked“.

If this is true, it would explain Spielberg’s interest in Katharine without ever even seeing her act–as she did a showstopping rendition of “Over The Rainbow” on American Idol weeks ago.

Katharine is apparently set to have this meeting sometime next week, so only time will tell.

    uuuuuuhhhh, no.

first of all, a remake of Oz should never be made, that’s like remaking Casablanca. secondly, if anyone were to star as Dorothy, it certainly would’t be a 22 year old bombshell. you can’t replace Judy, don’t even try!

    alicia is obviusly an idiot

kat is the best! shes a great singer why do females always feel the need to bash other females?

    so catty catty catty.

so what? judy garlands dead she died a long time ago

time to get over her and move on

and kat is not a bombshell! she’s an awesome singer and she’s gorgeous!

    I love Catherine.
But seriously, remmaking the Wizard of Oz would almost be as bad as the movie is itself.
    Okay, this bugs me.
    DOROTHY IS SUPPOSTA BE ELEVEN.
    NOT TWENTY TWO.
Seriously, I wanted Catherine to winwinwinwinwinwin!!! But she didn’t, it’s just her…as Dorothy? I can’t picture it.
WHY CANT SPEILBURG JUST MAKE IT LIKE THE BOOKS
Read the books and you’ll understand my reasoning.

oh, pssh. Andrea, you’re a female and your bashing me for liking Judy Garland and thinking Katharine isn’t the girl for the part. “Bombshell” is a good attribute, too, like Marylin Monroe was a bombshell, what made you think it was anything otherwise? I love Kat, and I never said otherwise. Choose your words before you accidentally write something hypocritical. G’day

Although “The Wixard of Oz” is a classic, I think it’d be interesting to have a remake that also ties into Wicked - to be able to show both sides of the story in one movie.

Katharine would also be an awesome choice for Dorothy! Although we don’t know anything about her acting abilities but sure know she can belt Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Hmm, we’ll have to wait and see.

OMG!!! NO!!! Just because she sounded good on idol doesn’t mean they have to make a movie out of it!!! there in the mitts of ruining a classic

I think that Steven should pay me a little visit before he thinks about this whole remake business. *eleka nahmen nahmen…*

Okay so… i think that judy can never be touched as an actress but there’s nothing wrong with trying something new… kat is wonderful adn i wanted her to win, i’m not so sure about the dorothy thing though. and wicked well, you should see the musical

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

ok. I LOVE Katherine. I was up till 2 in the morning voting for her on the last night. (got through 66 times) but NO. FIrst of all, the Wizard of Oz is a CLASSIC. Don’t even TRY touching Judy Garland’s portrayal of Dorothy. no one can do it. she is a ledgend.

second. I know that he didn’t say he wanted to make a WICKED movie (just add parts in. that’s bad enough) but just to get this out here: If Speilburg does a Wicked movie I WILL kill myself. The rights have NOT been reliesed. Defying Gravity is one of the most amazing ends to an act EVER and if the Hollywood bimbo’s try to do it on film they’ll screw it up.

PS: Don’t make me turn all Eleka Nahmen nahem atum atum eleka nahem on you! (I’m pissed if you couldn’t tell)

HOORAY, Megan. Only too bad I am the only one with the Grimmerie so I can be the only one to get all *elekah nahmen* (see? I even know how to make the text blue and italicized!!) LOL!!

    *go WoO GPGTPers*

am a bit saddened by the lack of faith people have when it comes to remakes. It is dangerous, yes. In fact, dealing with Oz at all is like stepping onto thin ice. This is not merely because of MGM’s Movie, but The Wizard of Oz is considered America’s first fairy tale. Despite all the parodies and humour that is directed to it, a great part of the populace recognizes that it is a part of America’s culture.

1939’s The Wizard of Oz was not the first time an Oz-movie was filmed. Prior to MGM’s classic, there was:

    The Wizard of Oz (1908)
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1910)
Dorothy and the Scarecrow in Oz (1910)
    The Land of Oz (1910)
The Patchwork Girl of Oz (1914)
The Magic Cloak of Oz (1914)
His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz (1914/15)
    The Wizard of Oz (1921)
    The Wizard of Oz (1925)

It is granted, all of these pale in comparison to The Movie. It is a classic, and beloved story without any doubt. It is the definate must-see film for any Oz-fan. But does that mean the story should never be touched again? This is American culture, and the story should never be allowed to die out.

Think of it this way, perhaps: If people had not been brave enough to tackle Oz in the films again, we never would have seen:

    Journey Back to Oz (1974)
    The Wiz (1978)
    Return to Oz (1985)

While they certainly cannot compare to The Movie, they are good films independently. If it weren’t for people brave enough to keep the Oz story alive after 1939, Broadway would not have been touched. There would have been no Oz, in fear that it could not live up to The Movie. You would not have seen The Wiz, or even Wicked.

Before everyone crucifies the idea of a remake, even if it’s based off of the book instead of The Movie, remember all that came across because of the idea that people wanted to keep the story alive in the media.

Demi Moore has the rights to wicked…..

Once again, I know where you live, Steven. Don’t hurt my story and I won’t hurt you!

    :)

  16. Comment by Catie — June 5, 2006 @ 9:20 pm

Wtf, when did Demi Moore come into this?
I’m pretty sure she doesn’t have the rights to Wicked.

I definitely don’t want Wicked to be made into a movie UNLESS it’s simply a professionally shot version of the stage production. You cannot re-create the magic of Wicked on the big screen. I’m convinced, as are most other Wicked fanatics out there.

I also agree that Katherine is amazing, but I would never in a million years pick her to play Dorothy. PLEASE GOD SOMEONE DO AN OZ MOVIE THAT STAYS TRUE TO THE BOOK! *cough*12 year old girl*cough*

  17. Comment by wicked wicked wicked — June 5, 2006 @ 10:00 pm

To be honest, I think that most people who read the book Wicked, didn’t think that it could be successfully made into a musical, yet it has surpassed everyone’s expectations or even hopes. I think that it’s time that we all just step back and let it be. I personally think that the book should be made into a movie with absolutely no consideration given to the musical. The musical was made for the stage, and it was also made for the happy-ending-seeking people that are usually interested in musical theatre. (not meant to be a dig, but it’s true) I think that Wicked should be turned into a movie with the original ending and the original wickedness left in tact, but until things are more clearly set in stone, we should just give it a rest and not get into arguments over simple possibilities.

ive seen wicked and i think katharine would be great in it….. who knows what is actually gonna happen

  19. Comment by Ms Hyde — June 20, 2006 @ 9:28 pm

Ok, am I the only one that thinks that Katherine isn’t all that great? She did well, but I think there were far better female singers on this year’s American Idol.

With that said, I cannot imagine her in this role. Judy Garland is an absolute legend, and there is no way to recreate that kind of movie magic. I don’t care how good Spielberg is. It cannot be done.

There are certain movies that absolutely should NOT be remade. The Wizard of Oz is one of them. Gone with the Wind is another. It’s just like watching a train wreck… absolute tragedy that you cannot do anything to prevent or help.

    two words…too cool!!!!

  21. Comment by Aaron — July 4, 2006 @ 10:56 pm

I have always waited to see the day to where “THE WIZARD OF OZ” would be actually re-made in to a movie… if Steven Spielberg can actually put something together and have unto the liking of the M-G-M film… then it would be worth it. Maybe a different retelling…. as NO ONE can replace Judy Garland…but who knows with the entertainment industry.
