‘Grey’s Anatomy’s’ Denny Not Dead For Creator Rhimes

Better than 20 million people watched Jeffrey Dean Morgan die on “Grey’s Anatomy” earlier this month. “Grey’s” creator Shonda Rhimes, though, isn’t quite ready to let him go.

Morgan, who played romantic heart patient Denny Duquette on the ABC hit, will work with Rhimes again on the writer’s next TV project, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He’s been cast as a regular in the show, which centers on a group of female journalists.

ABC has ordered a pilot for the untitled show, which is scheduled to begin production during the summer while Rhimes has some time away from “Grey’s Anatomy.”

It’s no big surprise that Rhimes would want Morgan for another show, given her oft-stated affection for both the actor and his character. This is how Rhimes put it on “Grey’s” writers blog: “[Denny] was my ‘you jump, I jump’ guy. He was my imaginary future husband. He was the guy I was dating in my head.”

Should ABC pick up the new Rhimes project, Morgan may have to rework his rather full schedule. In addition to his stint on “Grey’s,” he also has a recurring part on “Supernatural” (picked up for fall on The CW) and has appeared in a couple of episodes of Showtime’sWeeds” (season two coming later this year) as Mary-Louise Parker’s late husband.

Diane Sawyer To Leave ‘Good Morning America’?

Posted under Celebrities, Diane Sawyer, Television by Chris Evans on Wednesday 31 May 2006 at 3:13 am

Word has begun to circulate in the TV world that Diane Sawyer may not be long for her “Good Morning America” host job.

Sawyer has an out in her contract that would allow her to leave the show - and perhaps the network - next year, according to reliable reports.

“She’s retained entertainment lawyer Allen Grubman - not a move you make if you’re a happy camper,” Max Robbins, editor of the authoritative trade magazine Broadcasting & Cable, wrote in a column that appears today.

“Odds are that Sawyer is a short-timer and will be toiling elsewhere this time next year,” he writes. “My educated guess: CNN.”

It is only the latest insider report that Sawyer is unhappy that her successful partnership with Charlie Gibson has been broken up.

Gibson has been named ABC’s new “World News Tonight” anchorman, starting this week.

Primetime,” ABC’s longtime news magzine, no longer has a weekly time slot on the network schedule, which has led many to think Sawyer has nowhere to go within ABC and will start looking elsewhere.

ABC officials have insisted in the past that Sawyer has “a long-term contract” with the network and is not going anywhere.

Pop Culture Digest: Bush Sees ‘93′, McPhee Joins Bocelli, Couric’s Goodbye

Posted under American Idol, Celebrities, Katharine McPhee, Katie Couric, Movies, Music, Television by Chris Evans on Tuesday 30 May 2006 at 11:56 pm

President Bush will join his wife Laura Bush as well as family members of those who died on September 11, 2001 in a screening of critically acclaimed tragic film “United 93“. No information as to the exact date this will happen, but considering that I have seen the movie and know how it portrays Bush and his administration’s handling of the events on 9/11, it would be interesting to be a fly on the wall while he screens this film. I mean seriously..a line is “Where is the president?”, “…We don’t know.” I do. Reading “The Pet Goat“.

It was confirmed yesterday that American Idol runner-up bluesy songstress Katharine McPhee will join Andrea Bocelli on his June tour. I don’t know if you could really call it a “tour” seeing as how all but two of the dates are in Los Angeles, but nonetheless it should be a hot summer ticket–though no rival to the American Idols Live tour, which has sold out so quickly, they’ve recently added 20 more dates. It only goes to show just how much more popular this show has become over the years–a tour which at first was struggling so bad it was nearly scrapped altogether has now become one of the hottest events of the summer. How will Katharine do Bocelli and Idol you ask? Well Bocelli’s tour is in June, and the Idol tour doesn’t begin until July.

In other interesting McPhee news, though originally Katharine’s post-Idol single was to be the God-awful “My Destiny” with the Aretha Franklin cover from the Idol Encores” CD as a B-Side, according to the image of her CD cover at Amazon, “Think” has been replaced with her signature song “Over The Rainbow” (which they wrongly have titled “Somewhere Over The Rainbow), presumably the one she just recently recorded with big-time producer David Foster (Bocelli, Dion, Houston). Oddly though, “Think” is still listed as the 2nd track.

Looks like Katharine’s got a busy year ahead of her, considering the fact that she’s got her album to develop and record, two tours to embark on, loads of press, a call from Steven Spielberg, and a rumored casting in Joss Whedon’s “Wonder Woman.”

As to whether Katharine can act–this in from TV Guide:

According to producer-writer David Holden, who cast her in ill-fated mall-based MTV soap You Are Here (aka U R ?), she most definitely can act. “She was very, very convincing,” he says of McPhee, who played a high-school outcast living in her younger sister’s more popular shadow. And regarding the Wonder Woman thing, I passed your suggestion on to Kat herself when she dropped by our offices yesterday. Naturally she was all for it. “I would need to get a trainer first,” she said with a laugh. “I haven’t worked out in four months.”

Today Katie Couric says her final goodbyes on NBC’s Today Show, after weeks and weeks of re-visiting old clips and hearing well-wishes from interviewed celebrities that have appeared on the program. Speculation of Katie’s move to the CBS Evening News created a whirlwind earlier this year, and Couric finally came on the air to confirm the news–which then prompted NBC to replace her with The View’s Meredith Vieira. Many wonder if the Today Show can survive without Couric, who apparently brought sex to daytime television. I for one, have always found Matt Lauer to be sexier. But to each his own. Why do I get the feeling when she gives her goodbyes, she’s gonna pop out with a red clown nose and a handful of confetti and shout it was a joke all along? Damn publicity stunts.

Beyonce’s New Album ‘B’Day’ To Drop In September

Posted under Beyonce, Celebrities, Music by Chris Evans on Tuesday 30 May 2006 at 9:24 pm

Destiny’s Child principal Beyonce Knowles will release her second solo album, “B’Day,” on September 5 in the United States, and a day earlier internationally, which will be her 25th birthday.

Knowles co-produced, wrote and arranged all the tracks on the Music World Music/Sony Urban Music/Columbia set. Co-producers include Rich Harrison, the Neptunes and Swizz Beatz. The first single is “Deja vu” featuring Jay-Z and co-produced by Rodney Jerkins.

She completed the album after wrapping her role in the film “Dreamgirls,” which recently premiered to much Oscar buzz at the Cannes Film Festival and is set for a December 22 release. Loosely based on Motown’s Supremes, the movie co-stars Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy and Danny Glover.

“B’Day” will be the follow-up to Knowles’ 2003 solo debut “Dangerously In Love,” which topped the Billboard 200 and has sold 4.3 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The disc won five Grammy Awards.

Destiny’s Child issued its final album “Destiny Fulfilled” last year. It sold 3 million copies and spawned the hit single “Check On It,” which held the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for five straight weeks.

Group member Kelly Rowland’s own sophomore project, “My Story: Kelly Rowland,” was recently bumped from July to the first quarter of 2007, reportedly to allow more time to work out a marketing strategy. Both are managed by Mathew Knowles, Beyonce’s father.

Rumors Continue To Circulate Around Consatntine and Pickler

Posted under American Idol, Celebrities, Constantine Maroulis, Kellie Pickler, Television by Chris Evans on Monday 29 May 2006 at 11:10 pm

Rumors have been swirling that former American Idol finalists Constantine Maroulis and Kellie Pickler are an item. Recently, Maroulis went shopping at Santa Monica’s L.F. boutique and told store staff that he was looking for a “rock and roll look” for a “very special friend.” The singer then admitted that he was in fact shopping for Pickler.

As he browsed through the aisles, Maroulis spotted a pair of lime green shoes emblazoned with polka dots and exclaimed, “These are so her.” He purchased them along with a sexy black-and-white dress. Talk about having a personal shopper.

Beyonce Dropped 20 Pounds For ‘Dreamgirls’

Posted under Beyonce, Celebrities, Dreamgirls, Movies, Television by Chris Evans on Monday 29 May 2006 at 8:16 pm

Beyonce Knowles lived on a diet of water with cayenne pepper to lose weight for her role in movie “Dreamgirls.” The 24-year-old star lost 20 pounds to play the super-svelte Deena Jones, the lead singer of The Dreamettes - a 1960s-style group loosely based on Diana Ross And The Supremes.

She explains, “At the beginning (of filming), I was my normal weight. I actually gained a little bit, but then I lost 20 lbs. when I went from young Deena to old Deena. I wanted it to be something more than just make-up and hair. I wanted to see the change.”

The star tried to emulate the weight loss actor Tom Hanks endured for his film Cast Away. She explains, “I tried to do it Tom Hanks style, and I literally fasted because I had to drop it really fast in the film. It was a sacrifice. Definitely a sacrifice and it was difficult on the set. Everyone was eating cookies and I’m drinking, literally, water and cayenne pepper. But it worked.”

The singer’s mother, Tina, was relieved her daughter put weight back on following the shoot. She adds, “I’ve actually consciously and purposely gained a little back because I was too thin.”

Ian McKellen Channeled Anger Into Magneto

Posted under Celebrities, Movies, X-Men: The Last Stand by Chris Evans on Monday 29 May 2006 at 8:10 pm

Ian McKellen took inspiration for his role in X-Men: The Last Stand from society’s treatment of homosexuals because he was made to feel like an inferior outsider. The star has been openly gay since the 1980s, and he takes exception to the common assumption that homosexuals can be ‘cured.’ So he channeled his fury into the role of Magneto.

Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday McKellen vented, “As a gay man, some people think that it ought to be cured and made normal again and I find it as offensive as someone saying that they have a cure for the color of their skin. This particular story was close to my heart; it has an important message to young people who may for one reason or another be disaffected with society because society points at their differences and says that they’re inferior to the rest of us.”

In Brett Ratner’s third installment of the comic book adaptation, McKellen’s character leads the evil mutant’s struggle against government plans to introduce a cure for their conditions.
